Obituary

William "Bill" Reuben Bentz passed away peacefully on October 27, 2025, at the Mountrail County Bethel Nursing Home in Stanley North Dakota (formerly from Dickinson). Graveside service will be in the Turtle Lake Cemetery on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at 1:00PM.

Bill was born April 8, 1946, in Mercer N.D. to Reuben and Amanda Bentz. Reuben and Amanda raised their family in rural Turtle Lake, then later moved their family into town. Bill attended grade school in Mercer and Jr. High in Turtle Lake.

He worked for farmers in the area as a young man and then worked at the Turtle Lake Elevator, he also worked in construction with his brother Charles until he moved to Minot in the early 70's where he worked for Porter Brothers until being transferred to Dickinson in 1982, he worked there for Porter Brothers until the late 90's when he became self-employed with his own scrap iron business. Bill also worked as a security officer for several years at the KC Club in Dickinson. He was the strongest man you would meet and the kindest.

During his time in Dickinson, Bill enjoyed shooting pool, he was quite the pool shark and was on a couple of leagues with his sons Les and Lance, he also would take on some of the nurses and physical therapist during his time at the nursing home in Stanley and would get a chuckle out of beating them. He also loved fishing and hunting. He loved reminiscing about fishing and hunting trips with his kids, grandkids and nephews Steve and Kevin. Bill also was a fan of the car races which he attended for many years and did a little racing of his own back in the day. He also loved WWE Wrestling, every Monday night he did not miss it and could tell you about every wrestler and would be so excited to tell you about them. If there was a pinocle or poker game going on he was right there playing and schooling you, especially in pinocle.  He LOVED ice cream; he was probably the only resident in the nursing home that had his own freezer for his ice cream stash.

Bills mom Amanda moved in with him after she had a pacemaker put in. He took very good care of Amanda; they were quite a pair. They definitely took care of each other. They took a drive every night around Dickinson, driving by his kids and grandkids houses sometimes they would stop for a visit sometimes they would just drive by to do their check up on them. In the summer evenings sometimes, you could find he and his mom sitting out at Patterson Lake or the Dike with a fishing pole in hand, just enjoying life. Bill took wonderful care of his mother and adored her.

He was an amazing son, dad, grandpa, great grandpa and father-in-law and friend. He will be truly missed by everyone who loved and knew him.

Bill is survived by his children Lester "Les" (Kristi) Bentz of Glen Ulin, Lisa (Nate) Sherlock of Williston, Lance (Debbie) Bentz of Van Hook, Lori Bentz of Jamestown and Amanda (Jamie) Dickerman, Grand Forks. Bill had 13 grandkids and 16 great grandkids.

He was proceeding in death by his parents Reuben and Amanda Bentz, brother Charles Bentz, sister Marjorie Hoff, brother-in-law Delbert Hoff, a nephew Brian Hoff, son-in-law Terry Fisher, and ex-wives Sandra Bentz and Barbara Bentz.
