Wayne Paul Westman was born October 27, 1948 in Minot, ND to Lester & Violet (Reitman) Westman. He attended school in Turtle Lake, ND until the 8th Grade. As a teenager, Wayne worked for several local farmers. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on May 9, 1968. He received his basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington and advanced infantry training at Fort Ord, California. Wayne served overseas in Erlangen, Germany for ten months and in Quang Tri, Vietnam in the 5th Infantry Division. He was awarded a Bronze Star on March 12, 1970. Wayne then spent two years active duty and two years with the Army Reserve. He was honorably discharged from the Reserve on May 1, 1974.

Wayne met and later married Sharon Kapanke Derheim on August 28, 1976 in Washburn. He worked as a truck driver for Clarence Simenson and Bill Wilson for a short time before being employed as a welder for the boilermakers. Wayne worked for the sheet metal workers union for several years until receiving a full-time job with the boilermakers union Local 647 in May 1979. Wayne was employed as a welder and mechanic working several years as a supervisor. When work for the boilermakers was slow, Wayne worked for local businesses, Herdt's Tractor Repair and Underwood Farm Supply. For a few months, he drove truck with Bob Cottingham to Alaska. Wayne retired from the boilermakers Local 647 in November 2007. He then did was his heart was longing for, farming a small part of his parents farm. Any of Wayne's spare time was spent at the homestead working at his shop and building trailers. He was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church and a 17-year member of the American Legion Post 133 of Turtle Lake. In March 2009, Wayne was told that cancer had spread in his lungs and glands. He started radiation and chemotherapy in April 2009. By December, the cancer had spread to his brain and he underwent radiation treatment a second time. Wayne enjoyed the outdoors and wildlife. He also enjoyed camping, ice fishing, gardening, going to the casino, attending concerts, piecing together puzzles, and going for coffee with friends. His greatest joy in life was his three grandchildren, Stephanie Derheim, and Samantha & Spencer Derheim.

He leaves behind his wife of 34 years, Sharon Westman of Underwood; two step-children, Karla Derheim of Underwood, & Michael Derheim of Ashland, KS; three grandchildren; two brothers, Don (Sandy) Westman and Gordon Westman, both of Garrison, ND; and one sister, LoAnn (Dale) Jorgenson of McClusky, ND.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents.
