Obituary
Walter E. Singer, age 86 of Turtle Lake, ND, passed away after an extended illness on August 17, 2013 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Turtle Lake.
A celebration of Walter's life will be held Sunday, August 25th at 4:00 PM at the Turtle Lake Baptist Church with visitation beginning at 2:30 PM.
Walter was born October 19, 1926 to Adolf and Rosina (Bauer) Singer in Turtle Lake, North Dakota. He grew up on the family farm and took over the operation of the farm at age 21. He married Shirley Knight on August 5, 1950. They made their home on the family farm south of Turtle Lake. They developed, improved, and expanded the farm over the years. Walter and Shirley retired from farming and ranching in 1989 and moved into Turtle Lake.
As a young man, Walter became a committed Christian. He was a member of the Turtle Lake Baptist Church where he served in many capacities. He also served on the Turtle Lake-Mercer school board. Walter was known for his sense of humor, and in years past performed popular comedy skits at various local events. He loved music and sang in the church choir and several church quartets. He also sang in barbershop quartets that performed at local events. Walter played piano, guitar, accordion, and harmonica.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley; daughter, Janell Johnson and her husband J. Darwin, of Rock Island, Illinois; son, Paul and his wife Lynn, of Turtle Lake; daughter-in- law, Amy Singer of Bismarck; nine grandchildren, Kyle Johnson, Jordan (Kim) Singer, Steven (Julia) Singer, Todd (Kamaya) Singer, Kelsey Stringer , Bryan Singer, Trevor Singer, Grant Singer, and Aaron Singer; two great-grandchildren, Deklan and Sullivan Stringer; sisters-in-law, Leora Singer, Eileen Olson, and Leatrice Stockdill; brothers-in-law, Gottlieb Bauer and Floyd Stockdill; and many nieces and nephews.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, four sisters, his son Darryl, and two infant children.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Turtle Lake Baptist Church, the Crystal Springs Camp, or a charity of donor's choice.
