Walter "Walt" was born September 30, 1918 on the family farm south of Mandan, ND to Joseph & Katie (Friedrich) Kottsick. He attended rural school and helped on the family farm. Walt entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in May 1942. He was stationed on Ascension Island and served as an airplane mechanic. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to North Dakota and farmed for a few years before accepting a garage mechanic's position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Riverdale, ND. Walt enjoyed his job in the garage, but his great love was operating a tugboat and barge on the Missouri River up to Fort Peck, MT and down to Omaha, NE. Walt married Jean Lubbers on August 16, 1958 in Napoleon, ND. They made their home in Riverdale for many years and later in Pick City. Walt retired from the Corps of Engineers in 1984. He was an active member of the American Legion Post #281 and served as Post Commander for several years. He attended many American Legion state and national conventions and took great pride in conducting the annual Memorial Day program in Riverdale. Walt was also a member of the V.F.W. #6940 of Underwood and a faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Riverdale. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, stamp & coin collecting, and traveling the country in his motor home.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jean Kottsick of Pick City; one brother, Ben (Anna) Kottsick of Mandan; and many nieces & nephews.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents, & two sisters (Freda Morrow & Verna Bauer).
