Walter Flemmer, age 87 of Turtle Lake, ND died Monday, June 26, 2006 at a Bismarck hospital.

Walter was born September 14, 1918 at rural Turtle Lake, ND the son of Karl & Katherina (Wanner) Flemmer. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was raised on his parent's farm. Walter attended the New Home School #2, south of Turtle Lake, through the eighth grade. He later purchased the family farm and made the farm his home. In 1942, Walter enlisted in the U.S. Marines and served during World War II. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and served in the Marshall Islands, the Carolina Islands, Midway, & Okinawa. He earned several campaign and service ribbons as well as battle stars. Walter returned from the Marine Corps and farmed with his mother for several years. He married Olga Laib on February 14, 1952 at Reno, NV. They farmed and raised cattle together for many years before moving to Turtle Lake in 1979. Walter loved farming and raising cattle. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening, raising grapes, and growing fruit trees. His wife Olga passed away in July 1996. He then married Mathilda "Tillie" Hofer on January 17, 1998. Walter was a 60 year member of the American Legion Lawrence Stevenson Post #133 of Turtle Lake and held several local and state Legion offices. He was chosen to attend and represent North Dakota at the National World War II Memorial Dedication in Washington, DC. Walter was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Turtle Lake.
He is survived by his wife Mathilda "Tillie" Hofer-Flemmer of Turtle Lake; two sons, Duane Flemmer of Monkton, MD, & David (Mary Ann) Flemmer of Elk Grove, CA;
three grandsons, Tony, Christopher, & Michael; one step-son, Gene (Elaine) Hofer of Turtle Lake and their children Kimberly (Bill) Erdman of Bismarck, & Cory (Coco) Hofer of Montevideo, MN; three sisters, Marie (Ted) Gibson of San Mateo, CA, Lydia Dieber, & Violet Stelter of Bismarck; four sisters-in-law, Johanna Flemmer of Clearwater, MN, Martha Flemmer, & Elizabeth Laib of Bismarck, & Hilda Flemmer of Turtle Lake; two brothers-in-law, Art (Alvina) Laib & Ed (Marian) Sypnieski of Bismarck.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, wife (Olga), four brothers (Christ, Philip, Edward, & Martin), & four sisters (Christina Farson, Martha Pease, Esther Wagner, & Ruby Boe).
