Viola was born November 13, 1922 in Hebron, ND, the fourth of five children born to Adam & Ida (Krein) Fehr. She attended grade school and high school in Hebron graduating in 1940. She worked in her parents' grocery store and also as a bookkeeper for Auto Implement. She met the love of her life, Arnold Sailer, at church and they were married July 22, 1946 at the First Baptist Church of Hebron.
In 1953, they moved to Tioga, ND. Tioga was experiencing their first oil boom and the town was filling up with young families. Vi and Arnie became involved in the community and in the First Baptist Church where Vi was the church organist for 37 years. She had a beautiful voice and as a young lady sang in a ladies trio with her sister and cousin. The "Fehr Trio" blend of voices kept them busy singing at church and community events for years to come. They traveled to Jamestown to sing on the radio and also cut a record. She later continued singing in a mixed quartet with Arnie, her sister and brother-in-law. Music was an important part of her life and her love of music was passed down through four generations.
Vi worked for an accounting firm in Tioga for many years. She was the administrative assistant/ bookkeeper for the Tioga Community Hospital, and also worked at the Bank of Tioga. She always loved working with numbers.
Vi was an avid reader and acquired a great deal of knowledge via reading. She knew her Bible well. She loved to travel and the family always took a vacation every year.
In 1989, Vi and Arnie retired and moved to Bismarck to be closer to family. In their retirement years, she and Arnie took bus trips and car trips throughout the United States. She enjoyed spending time with her family and enjoyed playing bridge and pinochle. Vi liked to watch Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune and more often-than-not would know the answer before the contestant.
She will be remembered for her kind, gentle spirit. She was a great cook, making the best fried chicken and cream gravy, chocolate-chip cookies, and chocolate pies. Her grandkids loved to eat at grandma's house. She was a gracious hostess. There were always visiting missionaries or "revival" ministers staying at their home, as well as family members and their many friends who visited.
In February 2012, Vi entered the Baptist Home and bravely succumbed to COPD. She was a faithful and devoted servant of our Lord Jesus Christ.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Arnold Sailer of Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Deb & Duane Grubb of Bismarck; three grandchildren, Nathan (Andrea) Grubb and their children, Brittan, Aaron, Reagan, & Macy of Mandan, ND, Eric (Shawna) Grubb and their children, Leila & Sawyer of Bismarck, & Kendra (Andy) Bachmeier and their daughter Cambria of Bismarck; one sister, Irene Heinle of Bismarck; several sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister (Erna Mowry), & two brothers (Walter & Howard Fehr).
