Obituary

Verlyn Bauer, age 72 of Washburn, ND died Friday, June 8th, 2012 at a Bismarck hospital. He is now with the angels in heaven.

Funeral Services will be held 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, June 13th at the Washburn United Methodist Church with Pastor Peder Anderson officiating. Military rites will immediately follow the service by the American Legion Post #12 of Washburn. Interment will be at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. Tuesday at Goetz Funeral Home in Washburn.

Verlyn was born November 22, 1939 in The Dalles, Oregon to Gottlieb & Elsie (Singer) Bauer. At a young age, he moved with family to North Dakota and attended rural school. He entered the U.S. Army and served as a Food Service Specialist for 21 years. Verlyn traveled the world twice over ("and never liked to travel") and retired from the Army at the age of 41. He married Sarah Jernigan in Texas and they lived in Texas and North Dakota. She passed away in 1984. In 1986, Verlyn married Erna Vollan and they made their home in Washburn. They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on September 13, 2011. Verlyn was employed with McLean County for 23 years and part-time with Enerbase for 3 years. He is remembered for being a very kind and loving person and a man of few words.

He is survived by his wife, Erna of Washburn; two children, Lorrie Pitts of Temple, TX, & James Bauer of Washburn; five step-children, Carrie Steinwand of Lincoln, ND, Rita Rodriguez of Seattle, WA, Jody Wiest of Ashley, Louise Beeney of Lansing, KS, & Barb Braden of Bismarck; several grandchildren, one great-grandchild, & many step-grandchildren; his father, Gottlieb Bauer of Turtle Lake; three sisters, Arlene Mees of Turtle Lake, his twin sister Virginia Woodworth of Bismarck, & Peggy Kauk of Baldwin; one brother, Larry Bauer of Bismarck; and many loving relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife (Sarah) and his mother (Elsie), & sister (Irene Mae).
