Obituary

Veona Hansen, 100, formerly of Turtle Lake, ND died May 28, 2021 in a Bismarck, ND hospital.  Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at Trinity Lutheran church, Turtle Lake with Pastor Randy Emgarten officiating.  Interment will be held in the McClusky Cemetery, McClusky, ND.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.

On December 23, 1920 a baby girl was born to Dens and Helena (Sauchenko) Dasenko.  Little did anyone know how she would touch the world and build a legacy for her family.  Veona was the third child born to a family of eight children.  She learned what hard work was at a very young age.  She would herd cattle in the hot sun for a neighbor and sit on the prairie and cry from being homesick.  She started cooking for a threshing crew at the age of sixteen and then met her future husband, John Demchuk.  They raised a family of four children; Arnie, Roger, Karen and LaVonne.  Veona was a hard worker and contributed to being a farm wife in every way.  She would milk cows by hand in the morning and evening to sell the cream and she raised chickens to sell the eggs.  Her huge garden also provided for food for her family.  Veona could put on quite a feast for family and friends.  While in the nursing home she missed being able to cook a meal for her family when they came to visit.

At the age of 47, John suffered a debilitating stroke and Veona cared for him in their home.  She taught him all the things that we often take for granted.  John passed away at the age of 55, leaving Veona a young widow.  She went to work in the laundry department at the Turtle Lake Hospital.  She was left with a large two story home which she turned into a boarding home for construction workers on the Garrison Diversion Project.  She continued doing what she knew best, she did their laundry, cooked wonderful meals and packed lunches for them.  There was a bachelor from Veblen, SD who got used to her tender loving care and asked her to marry him.  She married Herbert Hansen on January 26, 1974 and they spent 18 wonderful years together.  Herbert suffered a stroke and was unable to move or speak for eight months.  Veona would visit him every day until he passed away on July 3, 1992 at the age of 62.

Veona eventually took up quilting, which was taught to her by her sister, Hilda.  She made over 1000 quilts for different missions and a personal one for every one of her children, grandchildren and her great grandchildren.  At the age of 96 she decided to embroider a set of dish towels for every family member.  She finished the sets on her 98 th birthday and gave them to family as gifts.

She is survived by her two daughters, Karen (Don) Eminith of Bismarck and LaVonne Reiser of Turtle Lake; her grandchildren, Laurie Demchuk, LuAnn Alderman (Bernie Meehan), Darnell (Toni) Arndt, Tamara Demchuk, Kimberly (Brad) Thompson, Jennifer (Mark) Anderson, John Reiser and Jami Hegney; 14 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Veona was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands, John and Herbert; her two sons, Arnie and Roger Demchuk; a grandson, Loren Demchuk; her brothers, Joe, Tony and Dan Dasenko; her sisters, Hilda Reiswig, Pauline Nuernberg, Ann Otzel and Rose Lethlean and two sons-in-law, Leo Reiser Jr. and Edwin Arndt and two daughters-in-law, Joyce Demchuk and Karon Goldade.
