Shirley Joan Singer, 90, of Bismarck, ND formerly of Turtle Lake, ND, passed away on June 12, 2023, at Baptist Health and Rehab., Bismarck, ND.  A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at the Turtle Lake Baptist Church with Pastor Steve Vetter officiating.

Shirley was born on July 6, 1932, in Berthold, ND, she was the youngest child of Vernon and Laura (Vollmers) Knight.  She was raised in Berthold and graduated from Berthold High School in 1950.  She was active in 4H and played clarinet in the band.

On August 5, 1950, she married the love of her life, Walter Singer. They made their home on a farm south of Turtle Lake, North Dakota.  She taught country school for two years, then devoted herself to being a full-time farm wife.  To this union three children were born: Janell, Paul, and Darryl.  She trusted Christ at an early age and was a member of the Turtle Lake Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years, sang in the choir and various vocal groups, served as Sunday school superintendent and Awana leader, and was a member of the Women's Missionary Society.  She sewed many flannel baby jackets and blankets that were sent to Africa.  She was also a member of the Red Trail Homemakers Club and the Turtle Lake Hospital Auxiliary, and a board member of the Northland Clinic.  She had the gift of hospitality and would always open her home to anyone for a meal or a visit over fresh baked goods.  She was an avid gardener, raised chickens, and helped with the wheat harvest each year by driving a grain truck.  She sewed many blue jean quilts for high school graduation gifts over the years.

She and Walter retired from farming and moved into Turtle Lake in 1992.  She loved watching her children and grandchildren play sports and babysat her grandchildren often.  She always had fresh baked buns, bread, doughnuts, cinnamon twists, or lefse for them.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Janell Johnson of Prescott Valley, AZ; her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Lynn Singer of Turtle Lake, ND; her daughter-in-law, Amy Singer of Bismarck, ND; her grandchildren, Kyle Johnson, Jordan (Kim) Singer, Steven (Julia) Singer, Bryan Singer, Todd (Kamaya) Singer, Kelsey Johnson, Trevor Singer, Grant (Jordyn) Singer and Aaron Singer.  She is also survived by 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; son, Darryl; son-in-law, John Darwin Johnson; two infant children, Greg Singer and Melody Singer; as well as her parents, Vernon and Laura Knight; sisters and brothers-in-law, Loseal (Elmer) Kilene, Eileen (Harold) Olson, Leatrice (Floyd) Stockdill.

A Celebration of Life for Shirley will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at the Turtle Lake Baptist Church.  The family will greet family and friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. There will be a time lunch and fellowship following the service at the church.

Memorials may be made to the Turtle Lake Baptist Church or Crystal Springs Baptist Camp.
