Roger Boe, age 83 of Turtle Lake, ND, died February 2, 2013 at a Bismarck hospital.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, February 6th at St. Olaf Lutheran Church of rural Turtle Lake with Pastor Randy Emgarten officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Olaf Lutheran Cemetery with military rites provided by the American Legion Post 133 of Turtle Lake.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM Tuesday at Goetz Funeral Home in Turtle Lake with a 6:30 PM family service.
Roger V. Boe was born July 23. 1929 to John Thomas and Florence (Springmeyer) Boe on his parent's farm north of Turtle Lake. He attended eight years of grade school in the "Boe" country school. He then attended Turtle Lake High School graduating in 1947. Roger attended college at the University of North Dakota and Interstate Business College in Fargo. He was also farming with his dad and brother at this time.
In 1950, Roger joined the U.S. Navy in Great Falls, MT. He spent four years in the service during the Korean War and was stationed in the western Pacific for 19 months. He was honorably discharged on October 22nd, 1954 as a 2nd Class Petty Officer.
Roger returned home to continue farming and running a cow-calf operation. In 1964, Roger went to work for the U.S. Postal Service where he served as a clerk, officer in charge and rural route mail carrier serving the Turtle Lake area. He retired from the postal service in 1989 and returned to farming fulltime.
Roger is a lifelong member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church which his grandfather was one of the founders. He was baptized and confirmed there, served on the council, and was cemetery sexton. Roger was a sixty year member of the Lawrence Stephenson Post 133 where he served as adjutant, finance officer, vice-commander, and post commander. He also helped with the Boys State program, the athletic program, and the oratorical contest. He was a past 5th District Commander, past Department Central Region Vice-Commander, past Department Executive Committee for the Central Region, and a membership Go-Getter for 46 years. In 2007, Roger was honored with being named the Legionnaire of the Year for the Department of North Dakota. Roger was also a member of the V.F.W. Earl Koenig Post 6940 and Voiture 187 of the 40 et 8.
Roger married Marjean C. Brown on October 21st, 1955 at Turtle Lake and they made their home on the farm north of Turtle Lake where they raised three children, Michael, Debi, & John.
Roger was an avid hunter and passed his love for hunting onto his children and grandchildren. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling and was a member of the local winning legion team. His later years he enjoyed touring the countryside and keeping an eye on the crops and cattle and watching the wildlife out the dining room window. His family was very important to him and he truly enjoyed family get-togethers and was very proud of his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.
Roger is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marjean Boe of Turtle Lake; two sons, Michael (Nadine) Boe of Turtle Lake, & John (Kim) Boe of Beulah; one daughter, Debi (Gary) Ballard of Turtle Lake; Seven grandchildren, Amy (Justin) Parisien, Camille (Bryan) Jones, Sarah (Neil) Kadrmas, Emily (Clay) Haraseth, Joshua Boe, Ross (Veronica Casson) Ballard, & Tanner (Lyndi) Boe; Seven great-grandchildren, Jakob & Aiyana Parisien, Aurora & Kendall Jones, Beckett & Keaton Kadrmas, Tatum Boe, and baby boy Haraseth to be born in March; one sister, Lois (Duane) Peightal; brothers-in-law, Keith (Elaine) Brown and Kenneth (Muriel) Brown; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Laverne (Irene), Ivon (Ruby), & infant Conrad; and one sister, Margaret.
