Bob was born June 13, 1930 to Vaughn and Edna (Kittleson) Hanson in Bismarck, ND. He graduated from Turtle Lake High School in 1948 and went on to Taylor University in Indiana to earn his BA in Sociology, graduating in 1952. After college Bob returned to Turtle Lake and farmed with his Dad. In 1958 Bob married his college classmate Alice Busch of Underwood, ND.
Bob and Alice farmed near Turtle Lake for almost 40 years where they raised their four children, Pam, Dave, Dick, and Peggy. Bob was active in church and community affairs. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Turtle Lake, serving as Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, chairman of the church board, and church treasurer. Bob was a 4-H leader, served 12 years on the Turtle Lake-Mercer school board, 4 of those as President, and was charter president of the Turtle Lake Lion's Club. Bob also drove school bus for several years. In 1984 the farm was recognized as a Centennial Farm – Bob and Alice were 3 rd generation owners.
For hobbies, Bob enjoyed reading, hunting, fishing, and in retirement, golfing.
Bob and Alice retired from the farm in 1993, moved to Bismarck in 1996, and became members of McCabe United Methodist Church. Bob was a member of the men's Bible Study group. For the first ten years of his 'retirement' Bob drove up to the farm and helped his son Dick get established. Bob continued to volunteer in the community, as an active member of RSVP. Bob and Alice delivered meals on wheels, distributed flowers at the hospitals, and ushered at Civic Center events for many years. They also volunteered at Medora for many years. Bob worked as a golf course ranger in Medora and in Bismarck for several seasons.
Bob and Alice enjoyed traveling during their retirement, taking cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, and the New England Coast. They also enjoyed spending time in Arizona for several winters. They were season ticket holders for the Dakota Wizards basketball team for all the years the team was in Bismarck. They were avid fans of the Turtle-Lake Mercer Trojans and attended most of their grandchildren's games.
Bob is survived by his children, Pam (Craig) Edson of Flagstaff, AZ, Dave (Kathy) Hanson of Turtle Lake, Dick (Karen) Hanson of Turtle Lake, and Peggy (Jeff) Bridges of Billings, MT; his grandchildren, Ryan and Tanner Edson, Melissa (Tom) and Jennifer Hanson, Rachel (Trevor) Thomas, Joshua and Jacob Hanson, Derek Sondrol, Jordyn (Grant) Singer, Onesti (Brett) Lapp, Taylor, Morgan, and Shay Bridges; his four step-great-grandchildren; his brothers, Stan (Judy), Glenn (Monica), and Rod (Karen) Hanson; brother-in-law John Busch, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bob was preceded in death by Alice, his wife of 61 years, his parents, and his sister June Westbrook.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation.
