Obituary

Rickford "Rick" Schumann, 79, of Washburn, died on Tuesday, March, 10, 2026, at Edgewood of Mandan. Burial will be in the Deapolis Cemetery, rural Stanton, ND on Monday, May 18, 2026, at 10:30 AM with full military honors. A celebration of life will follow at Rick’s shed located one block west of the Mobile gas station in Washburn; lunch will be served.

Rick was born on December 6, 1946, in Bismarck, ND to Milford and Alvina (Berg) Schumann. He was raised on a farm near Center and Stanton, ND, where he developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the great outdoors. Rick graduated from Hazen High School before pursuing a degree in architecture at North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS).

He was drafted into the United States Army in August of 1967, Rick completed basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama, before serving in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in April of 1969.

Rick married Karen and had two children, Errol and Ander. The couple later divorced. He then married Gayle (Braner) on October 10, 1992, in Colorado.

His career was marked by a significant contribution to Rocky Mountain National Park where he worked as an architect and designed the home for him and his wife, Gayle in Estes Park, Colorado. In addition to his work in architecture, Rick imparted his knowledge and passion for the field by teaching future architects in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The couple eventually found their way back to North Dakota and settled in Washburn.

Rick was not only dedicated to his profession but also a profound love for nature. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, often spending his leisure time, camping, and traveling, embracing beauty of the world around him.

He leaves behind his cherished spouse of 33 years, Gayle, sons, Errol and Ander, grandchildren, Magnus, Grace, and Porter. Stepchildren, Erik (Deb) Myli and Janelle (Paul) Ekstrom, step-grandchildren, Lauren Myli, Amy (Matt) Blomquist, and Jodi Ekstrom, step-great-grandfather to Mia, brothers, Earl (Nancy) Schumann and Lonnie (Kutzy) Schumann, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Rick was preceded in death his parents, brother, Kermit Schumann, and a sister, Kay Miller.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that a donation in memory of Rick be made to Central Dakota Humane Society (CDHS), Western ND Honor flight, or donors choice.
