Charles "Phil" Schulz, 91, Washburn, ND died March 5, 2016 at Sanford on Sunset Continuing Care Center, Mandan, ND. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held 10:30 AM Saturday March 12, 2016 at the United Methodist Church, Washburn. The family will be receiving family and friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Pastor Cory Thrall will be officiating and military rites will be provided by the Washburn American Legion Post #12. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn.
Phil was born August 26, 1924 in Washburn the son of Emanuel and Gladys (Forbes) Schulz. He was raised and educated in Washburn, graduating from Washburn High School in 1942. He served in the US Navy during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946 attaining the rank of Fire Controlman 3rd Class. Phil then attended North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton where he received an Electrical Certificate. He then worked for the IBM Corporation in Chicago, Ill. He returned to Washburn and married Dorothy Sheldon Reynolds on April 17, 1957. Phil owned and operated Schulz & Company with his father and brother-in-law. They sold clothing, groceries and later flooring, furniture and paint.
He was a member of the Washburn Volunteer Fire Department, Washburn American Legion, McLean County Historical Society and served on the Washburn Park Board.
Phil was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Washburn Wheelers Shrine Club.
Phil had a deep love for animals and enjoyed hunting, golfing, and American history. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends.
Grateful to have shared in Phil's life include his wife, Dorothy Schulz of Washburn; a daughter, Mary (Harry) Etter of Washburn; two stepsons, Stephen (Jill) Reynolds of Bixby, OK and Gregory (Judy) Reynolds of Bismarck; three grandchildren, Misty Reynolds, Joshua Reynolds and Addison Etter; a great granddaughter, Madison; his niece, Nancy Hillerud; his nephews, Lyle Luttrell, Stuart Luttrell and Philip Luttrell.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents and a sister and brother-in-law, Jean (Lyle) Luttrell.
