Peggy Schmitz, 75, of Coleharbor, ND, died on Monday, February 16, 2026, at Miller Pointe, Mandan, ND. Funeral Service will be held at First Lutheran Church, Washburn, ND on Friday, February 20, 2026, at 2:00PM. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Peggy Lee Cook was born September 2, 1950, in Grafton, North Dakota, to George and Lorraine Cook. She graduated from nursing school in Wahpeton and worked as a nurse for over 40 years before retiring.

She married Melvin Schmitz, and together they raised four children. After retirement, she remained active in her community through volunteering and working a variety of jobs. She had a lifelong love of animals and enjoyed caring for her pets, feeding birds, and spending time with her horse.

Peggy was known for her practical advice and sense of humor. She often reminded her family, “This isn’t my first rodeo,” and was quick to tell them to “get your poop in a group.”

She is survived by her children: Michelle (Steve) Schmitz Skelton of Potosi, Missouri; Misty (Jamie) Sims of Coleharbor, North Dakota; Eric (Sherry) Schmitz of Washburn, North Dakota; and Josh (Tiffany) Schmitz of Underwood, North Dakota; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; sister Mary (Francis) Kalis of Walhalla, North Dakota; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; parents George and Lorraine; great-granddaughter Raceleigh; brother, Guff; and sister, Ruth.
