Norma Nelson was born to Norman and Beulah (Jackling-Brown) Nelson on February 1, 1920 at Turtle Lake. Norma grew up on her parents' farm north of Turtle Lake. Norma graduated from the Turtle Lake High School in 1939. On February 1, 1940, Norma married Dale Hanson in Turtle Lake at the Peace Lutheran Church Parsonage. They lived in the Turtle Lake area all of their married life except for three years on a farm west of Underwood. When Dales' parents retired and moved into Turtle Lake in the fall of 1961, Dale and Norma moved to the farm which was homesteaded by Dales' grandparents, Swan and Mary Hanson.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Turtle Lake where she taught Sunday school and belonged to circle at Trinity. Norma sang in the church choir and the community choir for several years, she was also involved in 4-H work. Dale and Norma were avid square dancers, they loved to dance (especially the waltz and the polka) and rarely missed a dance with their friends in the community. Dale and Norma retired and moved to Turtle Lake in 2000. Dale passed away January 22, 2008. Norma loved to read, did crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and word find. She crocheted caps for the military to wear under their helmets for Operation Shoebox where the Turtle Lake Legion Auxiliary sent the caps for troops in Iran, Iraq and other areas of the world. We lost count but think she crocheted somewhat over 5000 caps. Norma moved to The View in Minot in Dec of 2014. Norma was proud of the fact that she walked every day (prior to her stroke on Aug 13, 2020).
