Melvin W. Berg, 94. Underwood, ND died September 21, 2018 at CHI Community Memorial Hospital, Turtle Lake, ND. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at Augustana Lutheran Church, Underwood with Pastor Randy Emgarten officiating. Interment will be held in the Underwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday at the church in Underwood and will continue one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.

Melvin was born January 20, 1924 on a farm northwest of Turtle Lake the son of Christ and Lydia (Schauer) Berg. He was the second oldest of 11 children. At the age of two he went to live with his grandparents/aunt and was raised by them. He attended country school and graduated from the Turtle Lake High School in 1941. Following high school, Melvin worked on his grandmothers' farm and worked for three winters in an underground coal mine. Melvin married Agnes Shere on July 20, 1947 at Augustana Lutheran Church. He then went to work building the town of Riverdale and also helped build the Garrison Dam. When the dam was completed he farmed in the Underwood area and helped contractors build homes and churches until retiring in 1986.

During retirement Melvin and Agnes took up Lapidary work. They attended many craft shows selling their gemstone jewelry made from the stones he cut and polished. They truly enjoyed making and selling the jewelry. In his younger years Melvin enjoyed playing softball and water skiing, he had back surgery, so that ended those activities. He always enjoyed hunting, fishing and some traveling. Melvin was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church, where he served on the board of directors for several years, he was also involved in many other church activities. He served at the Camp of the Cross Bible Camp for 6 1/2 years. He was a member of the Central Dakota gem and mineral society in Bismarck and the Washburn Civic Art Club.

Melvin is survived by his wife Agnes, of Underwood, ND; daughter, Crystal (Randy) Albrecht, Coleharbor, ND; a son, Miles (Sherry) Berg of Niantic, CT; his grandchildren, Justin Berg, Jody (Cory) Fylling, Kelly (Noah) Ekstrom, Michael (Jennifer) Granlie, Kristi (Pete) Moch, Crystal (Ron) Tooker, Jasmine (Louis) Zubek; his great grandchildren, Dominic, Jalen, River, Maddix, Coltyn, Gracyn, Avery, Evan, Liam, Gabriel, Magdalena, Delila, Tobias, Isaiah, Rebecca, Jackson, Ben, Isaac, Amelia and Ava; his brothers, Milton (Joyce) Berg of Minot, ND, Arthur (Mary Jo) Berg of Fargo, ND, Larry Berg of Gackle, ND; his sisters, Delores Sailer of Oregon and Verdean Hofer of Turtle Lake and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Mark; four brothers: Emil, Laverne, Dale and Delmar and one sister, Sylvia.
