Mary Hartl was born October 13, 1921 in Cando, ND to Aloise and Anna (Shaudeck) Hartl. She grew up on the family farm east of Cando in Coolin Township. Mary attended a little country school for eight years and graduated from Cando High School in 1940.
In 1945 Mary married Glen Hocking from Absaraka, ND. They moved to Wilton in 1946. Together they raised four children, Sherry, the eldest daughter, passed away in 1970 after a long illness. Glen died in 1991 at the age of 70. Mary continued to live in the family home until she was 90. Mary moved to an assisted living home in Minot for the remaining 2 years of her life. She missed living at home and being self-sufficient as she had always been the caretaker and was not used to receiving care from others. She loved to work outside in her yard and flower gardens, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. She took pride in taking care of her home and yard and was thrilled when she received the Yard of the Month award.
Mary was very active in the community and always willing to help people. She was a wonderful mom and enjoyed attending all her children's events.
Mary enjoyed living in Wilton. She worked at the Farmers Union Station in Wilton for 15 years. Mary was the secretary-treasurer for the Riverview Cemetery Association. She was an active member in the Presbyterian Church in Wilton.
Mary is survived by three of her children; John and Carol Hocking, Minot ND; Dan and Karen Hocking, Yuma, AZ; and Mary Lynn and Ted Duma, San Antonio, TX. Mary's seven grandchildren are Nate Hocking, Laura (Ryan) Nelson, Allison (Jason) Kayati, Dr. Michelle (Koen) DeGeest, Dr. Daniella (Victor) Perlroth, Caitlin (Aaron) Newman and Seth Hocking. She has eleven great grandchildren: Ashton, Zander, Eli, and Olive Perlroth, Julia, Grant, Greta Brown and Leo DeGeest, Natalin Newman, and Isaac and Anna Nelson; and sisters-in-law: Louise Hartl and Elizabath Hartl.
Mary was proceeded in death by her husband, Glen; her daughter, Sherry; three sisters: Louise Hoffman, Lena Overby, and Ann Bonn; and four brothers: Alois, Joe, Frank, and Alfred Hartl
