Marjean C. Boe 87, Bismarck died peacefully with family her side on January 22, 2023 at Augusta Place, Bismarck. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, Thursday, February 2, 2023 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, ND. Burial will be in the spring of 2023 in the church cemetery.
Marjean was born on May 13, 1935 to Fred and Hazel (Sondrol) Brown at Matthew's Maternity Home in Turtle Lake. She was raised with 2 younger brothers: Keith and Kenneth. They grew up on a farm in Medicine Hill Township where Marjean attended school through 6 th grade. They then moved to a farm in Arena Township of rural Butte and Marjean attended rural school there through 8 th grade. Her high school years were spent in Turtle Lake, graduating in 1953.
After high school, Marjean attended Minot State Teachers College and then taught school at "James School" of rural Turtle Lake for 2 years. Marjean also worked part-time for the Corp of Engineers at Riverdale.
Marjean married Roger V. Boe on October 21, 1955 at the Methodist Church in Turtle Lake. They made their home on the family farm with Roger's parents until moving to their present home on the Joe Torkelson farmstead in the summer of 1956. Roger passed away in 2013 after 57 years of marriage. Marjean moved to Augusta Place assisted living in Bismarck in August of 2022.
Marjean was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church of rural Turtle Lake. She was the first and only women president to date of the church council in the 120 year history of the church. She was also active with the WELCA and helped serve many meals and make hundreds of quilts for charities.
She was a 50+ member of Lawrence Stephenson Post #133 Legion Auxiliary where she held many offices. She was a past president of the North Dakota State Legion Auxiliary and was on the Girls State Board for many years. Marjean was active with the County 4-H, having served 27 years as a leader. She helped with the youth Farmers Union, PTA and Band Boosters when the kids were in school. She also served as President of the Alumni Association for the Turtle Lake – Mercer School. She belonged to many homemakers clubs throughout the years, the Red Hat Society and the senior citizens.
Her hobbies throughout the years included growing a huge garden from which she harvested cucumbers for her famous dill pickles which all her grandchildren loved and waited for. She was a very talented seamstress, making her own clothes as well as her children's and all her family were recipients of at least one, if not more of her quilts. She collected bells, spoons, thimbles and buttons. She enjoyed making lefse, angel food cakes and lemon meringue pie from scratch and treating family members with them for their birthdays and holidays. She dabbled in painting pictures. She also liked to hunt, bowl and travel. Roger and Marjean took many trips to Mexico, Hawaii, Branson, east and west coasts and to Norway, where they researched Roger's family tree.
Marjean is survived by her sons: Michael (Nadine) and John (Kim) and her daughter, Debi (Gary) Ballard all of Turtle Lake; 7 grandchildren: Amy (Justin) Parisien, Camile (Bryan) Jones, Sarah (Neil) Kadrmas, Emily (Clay) Haraseth, Joshua (Shelly) Boe, Ross Ballard and Tanner (Lyndi) Boe; 19 great grandchildren: Jakob and Aiyana Parisien, Aurora Boe, Kendall and Sienna Jones, Beckett, Keaton and Porter Kadrmas, Abram and Lennon Haraseth, Brody and Myles Boe, Eros Ballard, Tatum and Hadley Boe; a brother, Keith Brown; sister-in-law, Muriel Brown; a special niece, LoWenda (Rick) Allison and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband Roger; her parents, Fred and Hazel; a brother, Kenneth and sister-in-law, Elaine.
Memorials preferred to St .Olaf Lutheran Church building and cemetery fund or the Donor's choice.
