Obituary

Luella V. Fast, 97, Garrison, passed away peacefully at the Garrison nursing facility on August 20, 2020.   Visitation will be held at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, ND on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.  Private Family services will be held at the Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn.  Graveside services will be held at 11:00am Wednesday at the Turtle Lake Cemetery.

Luella was born on September 26, 1922 to William and Pauline Reitman, rural Benedict.  Luella grew up on her family farm in rural Benedict.   She attended school in Greatstone Township, in McLean County.  She worked at Figenskaw Mine in Underwood.  This is where she met the love of her life, Joseph Fast Jr.  Luella and Joe were married on June 7, 1942 in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Ethel and her husband Clarence Swanson.  Luella and Joe lived near Coleharbor until 1979 when they moved to their son, Monty's farm near Turtle Lake.  Joe passed away on September 10, 1983 and Luella continued to live on the farm until moving to Underwood in 1993.  In 2013, Luella became a resident of the Garrison nursing facility in Garrison.

Luella was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church near Coleharbor where she played the organ for 40 years.  The church members gave her a watch for her dedication, which she treasured dearly.  Luella later played the organ for Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mercer.  She also played the organ for the Sunday services at the Underwood Nursing Home and occasionally played for the Methodist church in Underwood.  When Luella became a member of the Garrison nursing facility, she would entertain the residents with her musical talents.  Luella was a very talented organist, piano player and she also played the accordion.  While living in Underwood, she worked for the Green Thumb program at the Underwood Senior Citizens Center until her health would no longer allow her to work.

Luella adored all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, you could see the sparkle in her eye when she would see them.  Luella enjoyed baking and she made the best rhubarb meringue pie.

Luella is survived by her daughter, Judy (Alex) Bovkoon of Brownfield, TX; 3 sons:  Jerald (Diane) Fast of Mercer, Larry (Val) Fast of Coleharbor and Monty (Connie) Fast of Turtle Lake; grandchildren:  Myron (Ellen) Bovkoon, Marilyn (Brent) Persilver, Todd (Kristi) Bovkoon, Lonnie (Bridget) Fast, Jeremy (Terri Duffey) Fast, Troy (Joy) Fast, Lori Fast, Melissa (Mike) Nelson and Brent (Lindsey) Fast; 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Glen Schoonover and sister-in-law, Mary Beyer
