Obituary

Lola Oneta Holznagel, 89, of Washburn, ND died Tuesday, June 28, 2022 after a long battle with Alzheimers and other aflictions.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, July 2, 2022 at Birka Lutheran Church, Washburn, ND with Deacon Jodi Lorenz officiating.  Burial will be in the Birka Lutheran Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Friday, July 1 from 5pm to 7pm at the Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn.  There will be a prayer service at 7pm.

Lola Oneta Skager was born on October 18, 1932 at Beulah, ND.  She was the 4 th child of 8 children born to Frank and Bessie (Koester) Skager.  She lived most of her childhood in Mercer and Oliver Counties in North Dakota.  As a young women, she attended the Fargo Hair and Cosmetology School in Fargo.  It was during this time when her brother, Eddie who worked in Washburn, introduced her to a friend who was a handsome young farmer from west of Washburn.  That was all it took, Milton and Lola fell in love and were married on October 7, 1951 in Underwood, ND.  Together they farmed and raised 4 children, on the farm, where they lived nine miles west of Washburn until Milton's death on June 7, 1996.  Lola continued to live on the farm for a few years, but then moved into Washburn to live until moving to Valley View Heights Assisted Living in Bismarck, ND until January of 2011.  In 2018, she broke her leg and was transferred to Missouri Slope Skilled Nursing.  In November of 2021, she moved to Sunset Drive Nursing Home in Mandan, ND where she lived until her death.

Although, she graduated from beauty school, she never held a job in that profession, but she cut hair all her life – for her family, many nephews and nieces and also many friends and neighbors.  Being a farmer's wife, she also learned to do most everything on the farm with Milton.  She could drive a tractor, plow a field, run a combine, stack hay, help with cattle and oh so many other things.  She was a great cook and baker.  She was very active in her church, Birka Lutheran, where she held many jobs over the years.  She was a Sunday School Superintendent for so long, they lost track of the years and quit counting.  Really, she could do just about anything and usually while humming or singing her favorite hymns.

To say that Lola loved children just doesn't cover it.  Becoming a grandmother was just everything to her.  Not just her own, but any child she met, especially babies.  She had a soft spot for babies.  She also loved horses, music, singing, and gardening.  She loved to sew and do woodworking crafts.  She found joy in everything as she served the Lord with her life.  After Milton passed. She decided to take courses at the seminary and became a certified G.I.F.T.S. member.  This meant she could serve as a supply pastor.  She was able to preach the word of God.  She even baptized some of her great grandchildren.

Lola leaves behind her loving family, children:  Julie and Lowell Rader, Washburn, Joan Holznagel, Washburn, Roger and Darlene Holznagel, Bismarck, and Milo Holznagel and Tammy Hoge, Bismarck; nine grandchildren:  Kayla and Lauren Sweeney, Lynell and Chris Kruckeberg, Jared and Jenny Holznagel, Erin Holznagel, Jed Holznagel and Jada, Stephanie Holznagel and Kaebea, Christopher and Lindsay Holznagel, Amber Leno-Holznagel and Tyler, Sierra Shellman and Alan, Brandi Holznagel and Cordell; 29 great grandchildren; one brother, Alvin and Linda Skager; one sister, Donna Dick and many nieces, nephews and brothers and sisters-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Milton; her son, Laren Holznagel; grandson, John Holznagel; great grandson Stone Lauer; brothers:  Edwin and Charles Skager and sisters:  Ethel Layton, Astrid Cook and Lela Hohbein.
