Obituary

Lloyd George Westerlind was born Sep 13, 1927 in rural Mercer, ND, to Robert and Caroline (Kravik) Westerlind. After living his life on the original homestead farm, Lloyd died May 26, 2020 in his birth home at the age of 92 years.

Lloyd was baptized Nov. 20, 1927 and confirmed in 1943 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Mercer, ND. He attended Mercer School until eighth grade, later earning his GED.

He worked on the Garrison Dam during its early construction. He also spent many winters in Edmonds, WA where he worked several different jobs including home building and the construction of anti-submarine nets. He later took over and successfully added to the family farm, including the ground that his dad homesteaded. Lloyd took great care of the "home place", proudly receiving the "Westerlind Centennial Farm" designation in 2004. Lloyd actively farmed for 50 years.

Lloyd had a passion for antique tractors and eventually became renowned in the antique tractor world. He bought and sold tractors throughout the Unites States, as well as countries outside of the Unites States. Lloyd also had a great interest in flying airplanes. He earned a pilot license in 1966. He and his brother, John Westerlind, built a small runway and hanger near Mercer. The Mercer Airport was appreciated by many local flying enthusiasts. As a young man, Lloyd enjoyed boating at Brush Lake and amateur photography.

He was known for his shrewd business sense and quick wit, but most of all, his willingness to help those who were close to him. Although he had no children of his own, Lloyd was loved by his nieces and nephews, who were important to him.

Lloyd is survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Westerlind of Bismarck, ND, many nieces and nephews and his faithful dog Tippie.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three older siblings, Theodore Westerlind, Helen (Westerlind) Schlafmann, and Arnold Westerlind and a younger brother, John Westerlind.

A viewing will be held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mercer, ND from 1:00-3:00 PM on Friday, May 29, 2020. A graveside service at the Mercer Hillside Cemetery will follow. All who wish to attend are welcome.
