Lloyd O. Anderson, 80, passed away at Good Samaritan Sunset Drive in Mandan on Thursday, November 10 th . Lloyd was born November 17, 1941 at the Washburn Maternity Home in Washburn, ND. He was the fourth generation raised in the home originally built by the Anderson family when they settled the land here as part of the Homestead Act. He was the son of Russel and Ferol (Masteller) Anderson. In 1966, he married Susan Goodspeed. They had two children, Presley and Elizabeth.
Lloyd graduated from Washburn High School in 1959. He earned a BS from Minot State University, a Master of Education from the University of Montana and a Doctorate of Education from the University of North Dakota. As a secondary student, Lloyd achieved status as an Eagle Scout. His working career included teaching secondary English. He served for many years as Academic Dean at Bismarck State College and then transitioned to teaching Psychology, where he loved working more closely with students. For one year, he served as interim president of Standing Rock Community College and served to accredit many community colleges in the Midwest.
For 25 years, Lloyd produced an annual Jazz Celebration concert through Bismarck State College in conjunction with the North Dakota Humanities Council. The event brought many world class jazz musicians to Bismarck, including Jaki Byard, Alan Dawson, and Dizzy Gillespie. Byard would become an especially close friend of the family throughout the decades. For over 30 years, Lloyd hosted a weekly radio show on Prairie Public Radio, featuring music from his eclectic collection of over 40,000 records. The show changed names over the years with names like Anthology and Friday Night Swing.
He is survived by his loving wife, Susan and his daughter, Elizabeth and his siblings, Jenell Olson, Bruce Anderson and Janyce Holznagel.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Presley R. Anderson.
Lloyd had a brilliant, scintillating mind and a loving heart and will be greatly missed.
The family will hold a private memorial.
