Leonard Karlson, age 89 of Washburn, ND, died March 31, 2011 at the Prairieview Nursing Home in Underwood.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 A.M. Monday, April 4th at the Washburn United Methodist Church with Pastor Marvin Winstryg officiating.
Interment will be held at a later date at Riverview Cemetery in Washburn.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday at Goetz Funeral Home in Washburn.
Leonard was born April 8, 1921 in Emmet, ND to Peter & Mabel (Smith) Karlson. He was raised in the Elbowoods area, southwest of Garrison, where he attended rural school. Leonard entered the U.S. Army in 1942. He served as a Squad Leader (745) which liberated the Dachau Concentration Camp in Germany. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant on December 6, 1945. Leonard was decorated as a member of the 42nd Division Rainbow Rangers Platoon. Following his discharge, he returned to North Dakota and worked as a shovel operator for Truax Traer Coal Company. He married Mary Peterson on March 14, 1947 in Washburn. They made their home in Garrison, ND and later moved to Washburn in the early 1950's. Leonard was employed as an Electrical Lineman for over thirty years. He was a member of the IBEW union and received their 50 year service pin. Leonard was an active member of the Victor B. Wallin American Legion Post 12 of Washburn and the V.F.W. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors.
He is survived by three daughters, Joann Karlson of Washburn, Paulette Schumacher of Halliday, ND, & Elaine Barnick of Washburn; one son, Jess (Sharon) Karlson of Billings, MT; 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; four brothers, Glenn Karlson of Garrison, Norman (Elva) Karlson of White Shield, ND, Harley (Grace) Karlson of Monarch, MT, & Vernon Karlson of Minnesota; one sister, Melba (Roland) Morgan of Manteca, CA; and many nieces & nephews.
Leonard was preceded in death by his wife (Mary), one son (Gregory "Jiggs"), one brother (Elmer), two sons-in-law (Jay Barnick & Richard Schumacher), and his second wife (Della).
