Leonard Ernest was born June 15, 1913 to Gustav & Josephine Johnson on the family homestead south of Turtle Lake, ND. He married Marie Matthiesen Schober on July 21, 1952 in Hope, ND. Leonard and Marie lived on the home farm all their married life. They grew various crops and raised purebred Black Angus cattle. Together they had 11 children.
Leonard had a passion for flying. His first airplane was pieced together from parts of a wrecked airplane he bought in Montana. He made it airworthy and taught himself how to fly. He later purchased a Piper Cub that he used for fox and coyote hunting. He also used it to help many people who were in need of supplies during the winter months. Leonard flew to many fly-ins and give his children and grandchildren many airplane rides. He flew his airplane until he was 94 years old.
Leonard served his community in various capacities. He was a member of the New Home rural school board, a 4-H leader, a Farmers Union member, and a member of the National Farmers Organization (NFO) for many years. Leonard enjoyed his children and loved following their activities.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marie of Turtle Lake; his children, Timothy (Barbara) of Palmer, AK, David (Carol) of Greeley, CO, Dawne (Dale) Brooks of Juniata, NE, Roger (Anita) of Arlington, VA, Richard (Svetlana) of Soldotna, AK, Terri Johnson of Grand Forks, Sandy (Grant) Lindell of Adams, ND, Kirsten (Norman) Tafelmeyer of Cooperstown, ND, Eric (Lona) of Turtle Lake, & Karen (Tom) Powers of Dripping Springs, TX; 34 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
