Obituary

Leon Lee Guenthner, 74, died 30 September 2024 at his home under Hospice Care due to Parkinsons.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30am on Thursday, October 3, 2024 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, ND.  Burial will be in the Turtle Lake Cemetery with Military rites provided by the Turtle Lake American Legion Post #133.  Visitation will be held from 5pm to 7pm at the church in Turtle Lake, there will be a prayer service at 7pm.

Leon Lee Guenthner and his twin sister, Linda, were born September 22nd, 1950, at the Hazen Hospital to Otto and Frieda (Adolph) Guenthner. Leon was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hazen, on November 5th, 1950. He was confirmed on April 11th, 1965, at Zion Lutheran Church, Bismarck. Leon was raised on the family farm west of Pick City. His family moved to Bismarck when Leon started 5th Grade. Leon graduated from Bismarck High School in 1968.

Leon enlisted in the US Navy and served as a Navy medic off the coast of Viet Nam. Leon was Honorably Discharged in 1972. Leon was once married to Judy Lee and from this union came Travis and Jennifer. Leon married Valerie Guenthner on October 21st, 1988, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Turtle Lake. Leon and Valerie made their home in Turtle Lake until November 2023 when they moved to Bismarck.

After Leon's discharge he worked at Melroe for several years. He then moved to Underwood and worked for Layton Freborg Construction building many homes in the Washburn, Underwood, and Turtle Lake areas. Leon then moved to Turtle Lake and later managed the Quality Lumber Yard in Turtle Lake and then went to work at the Quality Lumber Yard in Underwood.  Leon had to retire before he was ready due to his Parkinson's.

Leon was a 34-year member of the Turtle Lake American Legion Post #133 and at one time was a volunteer for the Turtle Lake Fire Department. Leon was currently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Turtle Lake. Leon's enjoyed camping and going on road trips on his Honda Gold Wing. Leon and Valerie had many adventures camping and riding motorcycle. He also enjoyed building projects and built garages, garden sheds and decks for other people.

Leon is survived by his wife (Valerie) of Bismarck, children Travis (Florida) and Jennifer (Washburn), four grandchildren, Anthony (Andrea), Dylan, Jaelyn (Seth) and Shania, and three great-grandchildren. Leon is also survived by his twin sister Linda (Duane Weiand), and Bonnie (Larry Kuntz), his Aunt Janice Guenthner (Bismarck), his mother-in-law, Magdelene Schilling (Bismarck) and sister-in-law Colette Schilling (Darwin Reinhardt). He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, and many cousins. Leon is also survived by his wonderful Respite Care provider of 4 years, Barbara.

Leon is preceded in death by his parents, older brother, Dallas, father-in-law, Alvin Schilling and brother-in-law, Kelly Schilling and may aunts and uncles.
