Laurence Elbert Franklund was born October 29, 1919 near Wilton, ND to Erick & Anna (Brostrom) Franklund. He was raised on the family farm in Painted Woods Township, Burleigh County, ND. Laurence (also known as "Lolly") attended rural school and Wilton High School. He entered the U.S. Army in September 1942 during World War II and served in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany. He was honorably discharged in September 1945. Laurence married Ruth Thorson on June 3, 1948 at rural Wing, ND. They lived for a short time near Yanktonai Dam in McLean County while building their farm west of Wilton on Highway 83. Laurence farmed for many years and excelled at woodworking. In his retirement years, he devoted more time to his woodworking skill and continued to help his sons' farm. He enjoyed music and is remembered for his mechanical inclination, often being referred to as "Mr. Fix-it". Laurence held a special love for family and his children and grandchildren were very dear to him.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Franklund of Wilton; four children, Lorin (Emily) Franklund of Wilton, Myrna (Wesley) Ecker of Grandin, ND, Mark (Maretta) Franklund of Amidon, ND, & Lois (Robert) Hanson of Moorcroft, WY; 11 grandchildren, Deric, Roark, Sheena, & Tyrel Franklund, Sara Eeg, Dan Ecker, Bekki Holzkamm, Keri Youngstrand, Cami Enney, Darrin & Trevor Hanson; 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Florence McDaniel of Marysville, WA; and many nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by five brothers (Victor, Arthur, Oscar, Clarence, & Vernon), and three sisters (Mabel, Martha, & Edith).
