Karilyn was born March 15, 1943 in Fargo, ND and adopted as an infant by Ralph & Helen (Thyberg) Nelson of rural Washburn, ND. She enjoyed growing up on the family farm seven miles west of Washburn where she cared for many of her pets. Karilyn attended the Conklin rural school near her family's farm. She attended high school in Washburn and graduated in 1961. Karilyn continued her education at Bismarck Junior College. She married Donald Kuehn on June 30, 1962 in rural Washburn. They eventually made their home on the same farm Karilyn was raised on. Together they raised two daughters, Debbie & Kammey. Karilyn enjoyed helping out on the family farm and ranch and would often assist in plowing fields, hauling grain, and vaccinating calves. She loved riding horse and was a member of the Garrison Wagon Train. Karilyn was a member of Birka Lutheran Church and taught Sunday School for many years. She also volunteered as a 4-H leader and worked as an election judge at polling sites during elections. She was an avid reader usually reading two to three books per week. Karilyn had a great interest in the medical field and took courses in emergency response. Her husband Don died on April 14, 1996 and Karilyn continued to live on the farm until her illness became too overwhelming. She entered the Prairieview Nursing Home in Underwood and later moved to the Good Samaritan Care Center in 2009 to be closer to family.
She is survived by her two daughters, Debbie (Richard) Aasen of Mohall, & Kammey (Mark) Mahowald of Woodbury, MN; one grandson, Tanner Aasen; & three granddaughters, Taylor Aasen, Shannon Mahowald, & Brittany Mahowald.
Karilyn was preceded in death by her parents and husband (Don).
