Obituary

John Alfred Westerlind, 80, of Mercer, ND died Sept 25, 2010 in his shop at the Mercer Airport. Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Wednesday, Sept. 29th at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mercer with Pastor Randy Emgarten officiating.

Burial will be in the Mercer Hillside Cemetery with military graveside rites provided by the American Legion Post 133 of Turtle Lake.

Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mercer.

John was born Sept. 8, 1930 at rural Mercer, ND to Robert and Caroline (Kravik) Westerlind. John was baptized in the St Paul Lutheran Church of Turtle Lake on Dec. 21, 1930 by Pastor Sorensen. He graduated from Mercer High School in 1947. He helped his parents on the farm for a few years and then enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He served two years in Alaska and 18 months in California. While serving in Alaska, he learned to fly at Anchorage and received a private pilot's license. After being discharged from the Air Force on November 30th, 1960, John farmed with his brother Lloyd for several years. He then attended a training center in Cheyenne, WY where he earned an aircraft mechanic's license. John went to flight school in Phoenix, AZ and received a flight instructor certificate. He started the Mercer Aviation business in 1970. He retired in 1992 but put his mechanical knowledge of airplane repair into repairing magneto ignition systems on tractors. John enjoyed repairing and building spinning wheels and other wood projects.

John married Joan Hamilton Presser on April 21, 1979. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church where he served on the council for several years, just recently resigning from a council position.

John is survived by one brother, Lloyd Westerlind of Mercer; four step-children, Dennis (Laurie) Presser of Madison, WI, Debra Presser of Bismarck, David (Teresa) Presser of Mercer, & Douglas Presser of Ottertail, MN; six grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Deloris Westerlind of Edmonds, WA, & Mary Ann Westerlind of Mercer; and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents (Robert and Caroline Westerlind),
one sister and brother-in-law (Helen and William Schlafmann), two brothers (Theodore
and Arnold Westerlind), and one nephew (Fred Westerlind).
