Obituary

John Sawicki Sr., 83, died June 23, 2006, at his farm in Wilton. Visitation will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wilton on Monday, June 26, at 7 p.m. Services will be held Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart followed by graveside services. A luncheon will be served at the church by the Sacred Heart Altar Society.

John Sawicki was born August 25, 1922, in Wilton, N.D. He grew up in the area graduating from Wilton High School on May 21, 1941. He married Gertrude Muggli of Glen Ullin on July 18, 1944. They bought their farm in 1948 and, with the help of his wife Gertrude, John continued to farm and raise cattle in the Wilton area until his death. John was instrumental in organizing and participating in area farming bees. In addition to his life long love of farming, he was very involved in the activities of the Wilton School Board, the Board of Directors of the Wilton Grain Elevator, the Sacred Heart Church Council, the American Legion Open Your Heart program in Wilton, and the organization and development of the Wilton Fire District.

John served his country faithfully by enlisting in the United States Army from November 1942 until December 1945. He was honorably discharged December 27, 1945, after achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served during World War II in the South Pacific including campaigns at Leyte and Luzon where he was Forward Observer for his artillery unit. After the war John continued to support his country through his involvement with the local American Legion Post.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Matt and Anastacia (Ewine) Sawicki. He is survived by his wife Gertrude (Muggli) Sawicki; his siblings Mary Brown, Olga Laughlin, William (Bill) Sawicki, Ann Werner, and Marlene Arman; his children and their spouses Sandra and Dennis Lay, Stacey and Bob Taylor, Carla and Lary Barney, John Jr. and Cheryl Sawicki, and Jaclyn Falkenstein. He is also survived by 16 grand children and 10 great grand children. He was well loved and will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.
