Irvin Louis Schmid was born to John and Mary Lindsteadt Schmid in Beulah, ND on February 14, 1921. He attended a rural Beulah school for his elementary education and then went on to attend and graduate from Beulah High School where he enjoyed participating in sports. He married Esther Binder on June 18, 1944 and they farmed west of Beulah. They had three children, Ivan, Earl and Elmira. Irvin was a 4-H leader when his children were growing up and he also served on the school board. Irvin's faith was very much a part of who he was, and for all the years he lived in Beulah he was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church of Beulah.
On July 9, 1973 Irvin married Melinda Giedd Luithle at Washburn, ND and so started a new chapter in his life when he moved to Washburn. He embraced Melinda's children, Byron, Jodi, Cheri and Tim as he did his own- he had an abundance of patience and love for all the children. He became a parts man for John Deere and later Irvin and Melinda purchased the NAPA Auto Parts store in Washburn, ND. He was a member of the Lions Club, Civic Club of Washburn, Gideons International, and a member and officer in the Washburn Baptist Church. After the kids were raised and the store sold, Irvin and Melinda moved to Bismarck and he became an active member of the Bismarck Baptist Church. He and Melinda enjoyed retirement and visiting with family all across the country. They were also able to take some longer sightseeing trips. Irvin always kept a small notebook with him so he could jot down where they had been and what they had seen or who they visited.
Later Irvin and Melinda moved to a retirement apartment in Hillsboro where son Tim and his family lived. Family was very important to Irvin and he enjoyed going to family reunions both large and small where he could visit with everyone, enjoy the good food and a sweet treat or two- especially chocolate fudge! In the last years when his health was failing the yearly small family reunions came to him. His gentle presence will be missed, along with his ready smile and sense of humor.
He peacefully passed away at the Hillsboro Nursing Home on January 17, 2014, about a month away from his 93rd birthday. He was preceded in death by his first wife Esther, and his wife Melinda, his two brothers, John and Lloyd Schmid and four sisters, Elsie Ford, Helen Clemmens, Irene Spurrier, and Verna Deane Browning. Irvin is survived by his sister Bernice Burns of Bothell, WA, his children Ivan (Lynn) Schmid of Amarillo, TX, Earl Schmid of Cincinnati, OH, Elmira (Greg) Barcello of Prosser, WA, Byron (Betty) Luithle of Underwood, ND, Jodi (Tim) Blackburn of Kenosha, WI, Cheri (Larry) Bena of Denver, CO, Tim (Kim) Luithle of Hillsboro, ND, as well as 20 grandchildren: Terry & Kimberly Schmid, Faye Wiedrich-Schmid & Donnie Schmid, Tina Ostler, Brian & Hunter Barcello, Aaron, Heidi, & Amy Luithle, Joshua Blackburn & Melody Blackburn-Ortiz, Mike, Matt, & Chris Bena, Steph, Jake, Isaac, Hannah, & Sarah Luithle; 17 great-grandchildren; one great great grandson and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Hillsboro Medical Center's Assisted Living and Long-Term Care facilities for all their support and compassionate care over the years Irvin was there.
