Hurley N. Holtan, age 88 of Washburn, ND died February 21, 2010 at his home.

Burial will take place at a later date in Riverview Cemetery - Washburn

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM Wednesday at Goetz Funeral Home in Washburn and on Thursday, one hour prior to time of service at the church.

Hurley was born on Dec. 28, 1921 at Falkirk, ND to Horace & Kristine (Nilsen) Holtan. He grew up on the Holtan family farm near Washburn and graduated from Washburn High School. Hurley enlisted in the US Navy on Oct. 3, 1942. He served aboard the MS Bloemfontein near the Admiralty Islands in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 3, 1946. Hurley returned to Washburn to farm with his father. He married Jennie Granlie on Dec. 26, 1951 and together they raised three children, Janelle, Jane, & Robert. In 1968, he started working as a part-time postal clerk at the Washburn Post Office. Hurley retired from the Post Office in 1987 and retired from farming operations a few years later. Jennie, his wife of 57 years, passed away on July 2, 2008. Hurley was a proud member of the American Legion for 65 years and a life-member of the V.F.W. He was also a member of the First Lutheran Church of Washburn and the Bismarck Elks Lodge.

He is survived by one daughter, Jane (Mike) Kuhn of Mandan, ND; one son, Robert (Marsha) Holtan of Turtle Lake; four grandchildren, Chris (Emily) Kuhn of Coon Rapids, MN, Sarah Kuhn of Butte, MT, Dustin (Becca) Holtan of Turtle Lake, & Alisha Holtan of Turtle Lake; five great-grandchildren, Brayden Kuhn, Kenzie McQueary, Colbi, Kylie, & Riley Holtan; three sisters, Helen Rivinius of Bismarck, Donna (Ted) Kleingartner of Bismarck, & Joy Larison of Bradenton, FL; and many nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife (Jennie), daughter (Janelle), four sisters (Gladys, Esther, Ruth, & Doris), and one brother (Elliott).
