Hulda Madsen, age 94 of Turtle Lake, ND died August 7, 2013 in a Bismarck hospital.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, August 12th, 2013 at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church of rural Turtle Lake with Pastor Curtis Hanson officiating.
Interment will be in the Ruso Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday at Goetz Funeral Home in Turtle Lake.
Hulda was born January 3, 1919 to Christian & Anna (Schaefer) Knodel on a farm south of Martin, ND. At a very young age, her family moved into the town of Martin where she attended school from 1st to 4th grade. Her family then moved to Ruso, ND where she attended 5th & 6th grade. In 1931, her family moved to a farm south of Ruso where Hulda attended a one-room country school. She worked as a "domestic helper" in several homes in the Ruso area for many years. Hulda married Nelvin Ingvold Madsen on November 2, 1947 near Turtle Lake. They lived in the Velva and Max, ND area before moving to Montana in 1956. They made their home in Hall, Montana where Nelvin "Ned" worked on a cattle ranch. Following her husband's death in November 1979, Hulda returned to North Dakota and made her home in Turtle Lake.
She is survived by two sons, Leonard (Zoe) Madsen & Elliott (Donna) Madsen, both of Casper, WY; two daughters, Karen (John) Hawkinson of Miles City, MT, & Cora (Ed) Hoadley of Bozeman, MT; five granddaughters, Lori Hoadley, Christine Hoadley, Amy Hawkinson, Rebecca Madsen, & Amanda Madsen; three great-grandchildren, Ahnika Thornhill, Colin Thornhill, & Malia Hoadley; two sisters, Selma Fylling and Ruth Nathan, both of Turtle Lake; and many nieces and nephews.
Hulda was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son (John Francis), one stillborn grandson (Ryan Madsen), two brothers (one in infancy,David Knodel), & three sisters (one in infancy, Lydia Light, & Esther Schmidt).
