Obituary

Hugo Schmaltz, 91, formerly of Washburn, ND died September 16, 2016 at CHI Community Memorial Hospital, Turtle Lake, ND. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday September 20, 2016 at St. Edwin's Catholic Church, Washburn. Officiating will be Father Patrick Cunningham and Deacon Keith Due. Interment will be held at the ND Veteran's Cemetery, Mandan, ND at 2:00 PM Tuesday. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday with a prayer at 7:00 PM all at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the Church.

Hugo was born September 9, 1925 in Strasburg, ND the son of John (Clara) Schmaltz. He was raised and educated in Strasburg and Linton. He graduated from Linton High School in 1944.
Hugo served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged on April 27, 1946 after attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He moved to Washburn with his brothers Leo and Adam. They owned and operated Schmaltz Super Valu and butcher shop. Hugo was also a bartender after they sold the grocery store.

He enjoyed reading, politics and especially attending Washburn baseball games.

Hugo is survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sixteen brothers and sisters.
