Hubert F. Holtan, Jr., age 74 of Underwood, ND died Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at a Bismarck hospital.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, January 22 at the Goetz Funeral Home Chapel in Underwood, ND with Rev. Dean Hartley, officiating.
Hubert ("Tiny" or "Hue") was born July 2, 1934 at Washburn, ND to Hubert & Mildred (Nelson) Holtan. In 1936, his family moved from Falkirk, ND to Washburn. At the age of 7, he was helping his father on the farm near Falkirk. He joined the U.S. Army in 1954 and was stationed in Germany and California. He was honorably discharged in April 1957. Hubert worked as a carpenter on the west coast until 1961. He returned to Washburn and worked at local gas stations and as a hired-man for area farmers. In 1966, he moved to Washington state to work as a carpenter with his brother-in-law, Earl Wilson. He returned to Washburn in 1969 and was employed as a McLean Co. deputy sheriff. On August 11, 1971 he married Claudia Schatz-Willits. He and his wife Claudia, and step-son Robin (Robbee), moved to New Rockford where Hubert worked as a deputy sheriff. In 1972, he and his family moved to Utah where he worked in the oil fields near Vernal for several years. In 1981, Hubert and Claudia moved to Underwood where he worked for area farmers and the local lumber yard. In 1988, he quit working to care for his wife Claudia who was in failing health. Claudia passed away in 1997 due to heart complications. He continued to make his home in Underwood up until the time of his death. "Hue" loved playing cards and dice games, puzzles, reading books, the Bible, and newspapers.
He is survived by his brother Elmer (Helen) Holtan of Kansas City, KS; daughter-in-law, Sarah Willits of Underwood, ND; brothers-in-law, Berle (Sherry) Schatz of Vernal, UT, & Rick (Kathie) Schatz of Longview, TX; two grandchildren, Robert Waelhof and Karl Willits; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents (Hubert Sr. & Mildred Holtan), step-mother (Emma Holtan), two sisters (Mary Ellen & Catherine), step-son (Robin Willits), one niece (Korliss Kay), and one nephew (James).
