Harold H. Janssen was born May 25, 1923 in Rock Rapids, IA to George & Amelia (Blum) Janssen. He was baptized at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in George, Iowa on July 15, 1923. His early years were spent living in both South Dakota and Minnesota and he attended rural school near Pipestone, MN. In 1938, he was confirmed at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pipestone. His family moved to a farm near Glenwood, MN where Harold worked on the family farm for several years. On June 28, 1952, he was united in marriage to Darlene Zietlow at the Zion Lutheran Church in New Salem, ND. The couple made their home in Glen Ullin and Garrison before moving to Washburn in 1962. Harold worked for the Otter Tail Power Company for 30 years. He enjoyed archery, establishing National Field Ranges in several communities, and organizing local archery groups. Harold was also an avid hunter, fisher and trapper for many years. He greatly enjoyed spending time outdoors. In his later years, he enjoyed traveling to Mesa, AZ for the winters, and shuffle boarding and golfing with friends. In 2002, he and his wife Darlene moved to Bismarck. They became members of the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church where they made many lasting friendships. Harold's greatest pleasure came from spending time with his family and his friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Darlene, of Bismarck; one son, Paul (Kristine) Janssen of Side Lake, MN; two daughters, Cynthia (Robert) Norland, & Debra (Doug) Beck, both of Bismarck; three grandchildren, Jennifer Norland of Minneapolis, MN, Cristina Norland of Pittsburgh, PA, & Heather Williams of Hatley, WI; one great-grandchild, Tamara Williams; five step-grandchildren, Jamie Stark, Janelle & Jared Anderson, and Joe & Emily Borra; and two sisters-in-law, Elaine Janssen of Underwood, MN, & Myrtle Janssen of Glenwood, MN.
