IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Harold S
Hultberg
August 18, 1924 – October 12, 2021
I was the fourth child, delivered by a mid-wife, to William and Lillie Hultberg. With two older
sisters and one brother , two younger brothers and one sister, we lived on a farm in a house my
Dad built in 1917, near Coleharbor. I also had twin brothers that died shortly after birth.
I attended the Coleharbor Public School graduating in 1942 as class valedictorian. During WWII
I enlisted in Officers Training School at U.N.D. as a member of the Signal CORPS. I was
honorably discharged shortly after enlisting to help my father on his grain and cattle farm. In the
spring of 1948, I headed to Seattle, sold my car, was hired on by a Commercial Halibut Boat
working up the west coast going to Alaska. After a month at sea, catching fish on a commission,
enduring storms, I ended up in Cordova not making a dime. I decided to go to Anchorage and
was hired on by the Morris Knutson Construction Co., hauling equipment from Boise, Idaho to
Fairbanks and Anchorage via the AICan Highway. Hauling equipment through the mountains,
narrow roads, constantly clutching going up and down and around curves was a daily workout.
In March, 1949, I decided to fly to Anchorage and was hired on with Birch Lytle Construction
from Portland, loading WWII salvage off the Aleutian Islands going to the lower 48. I came home
for Christmas in 1949.
Betty (a friend of my sister) and I first met in the spring of 1948 when a friend and I went to
Minot to visit my sister at Nursing School. Betty happened to get off duty early so we all went
out for lunch. Shortly after that I went back to Alaska. I learned later that Betty was campused
for two weeks for wearing her uniform off campus when we went out for lunch. When I returned
in 1949 we began seeing each other and married on September 30,1950, living on my parents
farm, who had moved to Garrison. We have four children (Ron and Debbie, Gary and Rose
Ann, Sandy and Bob Krumwiede, Craig and Robin). Our children gave us 10 grandchildren,
who gave us 10 great grandchildren, who gave us 1 great-great grandchild.
I was a member of the Coleharbor Cemetery Association and Victoria Township/clerk for several
years. I became involved with a steering committee to get municipal rural water to farmers and
cities. I like to acknowledge Mike Miller and Bill Lindell, amongst others, who spent
considerable time on this endeavor which eventually became the McLean Sheridan Rural Water
District.
Betty and I were married for over 63 years when she went to heaven in 2014. We had many
joyful times, and there were sad times, good years and not so good years. Together we visited
47 States and several Canadian Provinces. We enjoyed polkas and waltzes, enjoyed the
outdoors picnicking, fishing, and hunting with our family. Our life journeys, all in all, were good.
I was fortunate enough to stay at the farm past my 97th birthday. When my health and wellbeing
was failing the Garrison Facilities took care of me and I am grateful. I am looking forward
to the day when Betty and I can dance together again in spirit.
I requested no formal funeral. I would like to leave this world as quietly as I came into it.
