Obituary

Harley Hassler, age 84 of Underwood, died November 23rd, 2011 at a Bismarck hospital.

Funeral Services will be held 2:30 P.M. Monday, November 28th at St. John's Lutheran Church in Underwood with Pastor Darrel Aleson officiating. Interment will follow in the Underwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Sunday at Goetz Funeral Home in Underwood.

Harley J. Hassler was born May 28, 1927 in Underwood, ND to John & Louise (Roeder) Hassler. He grew up on the family farm southwest of Underwood and attended the Longfellow rural school for seven years. Harley graduated from Underwood High School in 1945. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945 and served in the Philippines until his honorable discharge in July 1946. Harley worked as a mechanic during the construction phase of the Garrison Dam. In 1957, he took over the operation of the family farm near Underwood. Harley married Shirley Sheldon on June 20, 1964 in Fargo. They made their home on the farm and raised one daughter, Barbara. He was a dedicated member of several community organizations and boards. Harley enjoyed spending time with his family and woodturning. He took great pride in his self-constructed four-wheel drive tractor which he used for many years on the farm.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Hassler of Underwood; one daughter, Barbara Hassler of North Dakota; three brothers-in-law, Dr. Don (Mary) Sheldon, Robert (Donna) Sheldon, & Jerry (Patricia) Sheldon; and many nieces, nephews, & cousins.

Harley was preceded in death by his parents, one sister (Clarice), & two infant brothers.
