As a child she enjoyed working on her family farm, and could be found with her head in a book often times, she also spent a lot of time translating for her brother Robin! The Samuelson family spent a lot of time at the lakes with close friend the Griffins, and at the Engel family farm just outside of Velva, ND.
After leaving Christine the family moved to Des Moines, Iowa for a year before moving to Fargo, ND. Gussie started her schooling at Roosevelt grade school in North Fargo before moving to Minot, ND to be closer to the their grandparents the Engels, at which time she started school at Sunnyside elementary in Minot. Gussie enjoyed playing with her easy bake oven and played the violin for year as she went through elementary, Jr high and high school. She attended Jr. High at Jim Hill and high school at the brand new Minot High where she graduated in 1976.
