Grace LaVonne (Wenger) Carlson, 83, formerly of Washburn passed away Sunday, October 16, 2016, at Sanford Health in Bismarck, ND. A service of celebration will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 801 E. Denver Ave., Bismarck, with Pastor Les Wolfgram officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 PM in the Riverview Cemetery, Washburn. Visitation will take place at Goetz Funeral Home in Washburn Wednesday evening from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.
Grace was born August 30, 1933, to James O. and Emma (Pfaffengut) Wenger. Grace was raised in Underwood and graduated from Underwood High School in 1951. She married Curt Carlson of Washburn on October 5, 1952. They lived and worked on the family farm north of Washburn.
Grace was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Underwood, having been baptized, confirmed and married in the church. She was a member of St. John's LWML and held many offices over the years. She also was Vice President for the ND District LWML in the mid to late 1960's.
After Curt and Grace sold the dairy cows in the mid 70's, they spent lots of time square dancing, traveling all around the world and visiting their children and grandchildren out-of-state.
Grace was well known for her wonderful cooking and baking skills and was a gracious host for many family holidays. She enjoyed hosting friends for afternoon coffee and goodies.In April 2015, Grace and Curt moved off the family farm to Valley View Heights, Bismarck. They became members of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church.
Grace leaves behind her husband, Curtis, Bismarck; sons Wayne (Seyhan), Ft Walton Beach, FL; Dan (special friend Carol Scholl), Washburn; and daughter Cheryl (Ken) Purdy, Bismarck. Also, six grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Brothers Richard O. (Patricia) Wenger, McKean, PA; and Don (Cindy) Wenger, Kyle, TX; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Emma and James Wenger, brother Kenzie and sister Althea.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials to the Orphan Grain Train, Dakota Boys Ranch, or Martin Luther School.
