George W. Swanson, age 89 of Washburn and Bismarck, ND, passed away June 4, 2010 at the Prairieview Nursing Home in Underwood.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, June 9 at Birka Lutheran Church of rural Washburn with Rev. Joel Sherer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday at Goetz Funeral Home in Washburn, and will continue on Wednesday, one hour prior to time of service at the church.
George was born October 2, 1920 in Bismarck, ND to Arthur & Anna (Carlson) Swanson. Both of his parents died by the time he turned 7 years old and he was cared for by several uncles and aunts. George attended country schools at Falkirk, ND and rural Washburn. He graduated from Underwood High School in 1940 and attended trade school at the ND State School of Science in Wahpeton. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in October 1942 and was honorably discharged under medical conditions in February 1944. George began farming in 1945 along with his brother Clarence. George married Marlene Geigle on Dec. 1, 1949 in Washburn and they made their home on a farm west of Washburn for many years. He was a lifetime member of Birka Lutheran Church and served as treasurer, a council member, and junior-high Sunday school teacher. George semi-retired in 1983 and he and Marlene moved to Bismarck. They became associate members of First Lutheran Church in Bismarck and made many new friends. He held a life-long love for reading and took great interest in world history. His wife Marlene passed away in November 2006 and he later became a resident of Valley View Apartments, the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, and Prairieview Nursing Home in November 2009.
He is survived by two sons, Dean A. (Sandy) Swanson & George L. (Val Rae) Swanson, both of Washburn; two daughters, Sandi (Jon) Strinden of Fargo, & Debra (Bob) Nelson of St. Bonifacius, MN; ten special grandchildren, Erica, Ashley, Jordan, Paul, Timothy, Andrew, Daniel, Emily, Samantha, & Rebecca.
George was preceded in death by his wife (Marlene), one brother (Clarence), & one sister (Agnes Swanson).
