Obituary

George Gilfus, 92, of Turtle Lake, North Dakota, passed away on May 28, 2025, in the Turtle Lake Hospital. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30am on Monday, June 2, 2025, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Turtle Lake, ND.  Burial will be in Rosehill Memorial Park Cemetery, Minot, ND. Visitation will be held one hour Prior on Monday, at the church. The funeral service will be livestreamed at the bottom of George's obituary.

George Anton Gilfus was born on December 15,1932 in Selz ND to Anton and Barbara (Schaefer) Gilfus. He was raised and educated in Selz. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1952 and was discharged in December of 1953. George married Caroline Alveshure, to this union two daughters were born Peggy and Patty. They moved to Minot in 1956.

He was employed by the Great Northern Railroad and Bridgeman Creamery in Minot. While working for Bridgeman he was named Salesman of the year. George later moved to Williston where he worked for Boarder States Electric until his retirement in 1995. After retirement he worked part time for the corps of engineers at the downstream camp by Riverdale.

George married Verna Bauer from Turtle Lake in 2002. He was very active in Turtle Lake and especially proud to be a Legion member. He served several positions with the legion over the years. George was able to take the Veterans Honor flight to Washington D.C.; this was a highlight and memorable trip for him.

One of his final requests after becoming ill was to return home to Turtle Lake, where he was embraced and loved by so many.

George is survived by daughter, Peggy (Levi) Johnson, Granddaughters, Cheyenne (Ryan) Jundt, Leah (Nick) McGahey, Grandson, Tanner (Brittany) Douglas. Great-Grandchildren, Keaton and Karden Jundt, Marlei, Bentlei and Preslei McGahey. Stepson Robert (Gail) Bauer, their son Sean Bauer and daughter Stefanie (Nick) Mortwick. Special longtime friend Eveline Heitmann and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents, daughter, Patty Douglas, wife, Verna Bauer and stepson Brent Bauer.
