Gene Hilken, 86, of Wilton, ND, died March 14, 2016 at the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck. Funeral Services will be held 1:00 P.M. Saturday, March 19, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church of Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Wilton and will continue one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church in Bismarck. Interment will be held at 4:30 PM Saturday at Riverview Cemetery, Wilton.
Gene was born September 1, 1929 in Wilton the son of Emil and Bonita (Drewer) Hilken. He was raised and educated in Wilton. He graduated from Wilton High School in 1947. Gene attended Jamestown State College and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. He substitute taught in Wilton and farmed with his father. He married Vivian Zumbaum on November 24, 1961 at Zion Lutheran Church in Bismarck. They resided in Wilton and Gene continued his farming interests. He retired from farming in 2013. Gene served as a ND State Senator for 2 terms.
Gene was very active on community boards, some of which include; ND Game and Fish Advisory Board, Wilton Elevator Board, Capital Electric Board of Directors for 38 years. He also served as President of Wilton Sportsmans Club and the Wilton/Regan Farmers Union Local. Gene also served as a board member and president of the ND Amateur Basketball Association and was inducted into the ND Amateur Basketball Association Hall of Fame. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wilton and served as an Elder and was a life member of the Bismarck Elks Club.
Gene enjoyed playing amateur basketball, bowling, dancing, fishing, hunting and most of all spending quality time with his 2 sons, family and friends. He will always be remembered for his love of strawberry ice cream.
Grateful to have shared in Gene's life included his wife, Vivian; his sons, Kipton and Kyle; a sister, Marcia (Sean) Sweeney of Winnipeg, MB and a sister-in-law, Audrey McIntyre of Florida and several nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Kimberly Hilken, a brother, Merwyn Hilken, two sisters, Delores Zobel and Marjorie Strom.
