Evener W. Bettger, 97, Mandan, ND died October 13, 2022 at Prospera on Sunset, Mandan. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 17, 2022 at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn with Pastor Chuck Mann officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be held in the Zion German Lutheran Cemetery, Washburn with military rites provided by the Washburn American Legion and United States Navy Honor Guard.
Evener was born February 1, 1925 in Bremen, ND the son of Jacob and Mary (Look) Bettger. He was educated in Washburn and worked for farmers as a young man. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 until 1946. Evener was a Seaman First Class and Gunner on the U.S.S. Ringgold and the U.S.S. Bailey. His decorations included Philippines Liberation Ribbon, American Area Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He was honorably discharged and returned to the Washburn area and continued to work for area farmers. Evener moved to Bismarck in 1949 and worked for Bismarck Grocery as a trucker.
He married Martha Stoller of Carson, ND in 1950 and they had three children, Dennis Evener, Duane Ray and Carol Marie. In 1953 the family moved to Tacoma, WA where Evener worked for Boeing Aircraft. They returned to Bismarck in 1954 where he worked for Ted's Transfer/Aaction Movers as a trucker/mover. He later worked for the ND Highway Department until his retirement. Evener and Martha divorced in 1978. Evener moved back to Washburn in 2000 and later moved to Mandan 2006. He resided at Sanford Health Sunset Drive Continuing Care Center in Mandan since 2020. It was an honor for Evener and his grandson, Joshua to be part of the inaugural ND Roughrider Honor Flight to Washington, DC in 2009.
Evener is survived by his son, Duane Bettger of St. Paul, MN; his daughter, Carol Anderberg of Mandan, ND; his daughter-in-law, Jackie Bettger of Oakdale. MN; his beloved grandson, Joshua Schuh of Mandan; his granddaughters, Teresa, Jessica, Cheryl, Crystal, Allison and Amanda; his grandson, John and many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Mary; his beloved son, Dennis; his sisters, Frieda, Clara, Esther and Margaret.
