Esther R. Radke, 96, formerly of Underwood, ND died January 30, 2014 in the Baptist Home, Bismarck, ND. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Monday, February 3, 2014 at Faith Evangelical Church, Underwood, ND. Officiating will be the Rev. Jeff Higbie. Interment will in the Underwood Cemetery. Visitation will from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Sunday at The
Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church on Monday.
Esther was born November 27, 1917 on a farm south of Anamoose, ND the daughter of Fred and Emma (Schacher) Kessler. She attended country school through the 8th grade. She moved to Underwood in the 1930's where she was employed by the Syl Vonderheide family. Esther met Carl Radke and they were married on September 15, 1940. From this union three sons were born. In 1963 they purchased Outlaw Trading Company from the Vonderheide's. They owned and operated Radke's Fairway Foods and later naming it Radke's Supervalu. Later, it was sold to their sons Curt and Richard. Carl passed away in 1997. Esther also worked at the Prairie View Nursing Home where she became a resident in December of 2011. When Prairie View Nursing Home closed she became a resident of the Baptist Home in Bismarck. She died January 30, 2014 in the home.
Esther was saved as a teenager and was baptized shortly after by the Rev. Karl Gieser. She was a charter member of the First Baptist Church, Underwood. She was a member of the ladies aid for many years.
Esther will always be remembered for her kuchen and buns, she would provide them for many occasions and for her brother-in-law, Melvin Koenig.
Esther is survived by her sons; Curtis (Doreen), Richard (Jacque) all of Underwood, ND, Eugene (Michelle) of Mandan, ND; 3 grandchildren; 10 Great Grandchildren, 4 Great Great Grandchildren, 5 Step-Grandchildren; two brothers: Rueben (Tess) Kessler, Billings, MT and Alvin (Evelyn) Kessler, Seattle, WA; three sisters: Velma Janke, Hillsboro, OR, Rose Koenig, Underwood, ND and Helen (Chuck) Rogness, Peoria, AZ and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1997; two brothers: Elmer and John and two sisters: Florence Kessler and Ruth Kludt.
