Ervin R. Schafer, age 95 of Bismarck, formerly of Underwood, died May 17th at his residence.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, May 22nd at Bismarck Baptist Church (22nd St. & LaForest Ave.) with Pastor Allen Finger officiating. Following a fellowship lunch, interment will be in the Underwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at Bismarck Baptist Church.
Ervin was born May 9, 1918 in Underwood, ND to Charles J. & Christina (Dietrich) Schafer. He attended rural school near Underwood through the 8th grade. Ervin married Adeline Mittleider on July 30, 1939 in Washburn. Together they farmed for 33 years southwest of Underwood. In 1947, they moved to Fargo where they owned and operated a grocery store for 1 ½ years before returning to their farm near Underwood. They raised one daughter and three sons.
Ervin served on the Underwood School Board and the Underwood Baptist Church council and Sunday school. He was a member of The Gideons International since 1952. Ervin also served as secretary/treasurer of the Underwood Rural Fire District for nine years.
After retiring from farming, they operated a Motel 6 in Davenport, IA for one year. They returned to Underwood where he operated the Lawn Mower Shop for 13 years before moving to Bismarck due to health reasons.
Ervin and Adeline spent 27 winters in Arizona where their youngest son and family lived. He has made his home at the Primrose Retirement Community for over 8 years.
He is survived by three sons, Wallace (Mary) Schafer of Bismarck, Terry (LaDean) Schafer of Linton, & Raymond (Linda) Schafer of Gilbert, AZ; one brother & sister-in-law, Lloyd & Ardella Schafer of Bismarck; 8 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 6 step-great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Ervin was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Adeline (in 2005), his daughter Cleo M. Remmick (in 2005), three brothers, and three sisters.
