Emil Schilling, age 90 of Minot, ND died Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at ManorCare Health Systems in Minot.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, Sept. 4 at the Goetz Funeral Home Chapel in Turtle Lake, ND with Rev. Curtis Hanson, officiating.
Interment will follow at the Turtle Lake Cemetery with military rites provided by the American Legion Post #133 of Turtle Lake.
Visitation will be held Friday one hour prior to time of service at the funeral home.
Emil was born November 17, 1918 near Turtle Lake, ND to Israel & Mathilda Schilling. He attended rural school north of Turtle Lake and as a young man worked for area farmers. Emil was inducted into the U.S. Army in May 1942. He served under General Merrill in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of World War II and was a recipient of two Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in October 1945. Emil returned to the Turtle Lake area and married Jean M. Moore on November 21, 1947 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Emil & Jean moved to Fargo for a short time where he attended barber school. They later moved to Minot where Emil worked for various barber shops in the Minot area. He purchased Town & Country Barber Shop along with his business partner Jim Jones. Emil & Jim worked together for many years and developed many friendships with their customers. In retirement, Emil enjoyed working around his home and gardening. He enjoyed following his nephews farming operations and looked forward to harvest season every year.
He is survived by one daughter, Cathy (Paul) Henschel of Emmons, MN; two grandchildren, Andy (Jennifer) Henschel & Mindy Henschel; three great-grandchildren, Drew, Alex, & Justin; special nephew, Roger (Leatrice) Schilling of Turtle Lake; a special friend, Alice Huber of Minot; and several nieces & nephews.
Emil was preceded in death by his wife Jean (in 1985); a great granddaughter, Chloe Elizabeth; three brothers, Jake, John, & Alvin Schilling; and one sister, Olga.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the American Legion Post #133 of Turtle Lake.
