Elsie was born in Washburn, ND on September 28, 1921 the daughter of Walfred and Hattie (Holznagel) Ecklund, joining her sister Amanda. Her father died when she was a year old. Her mother married Walter Grewe and 2 brothers, Leo and Lavern soon joined the family. She lived her entire life in the Missouri River area west of Washburn. She lived during the many years of hardship, during the depression and she walked to rural school. Her living conditions at home were bitter.
In 1937, Elsie married Clements Clark, a young man from Underwood. Following their marriage, Clements worked at various jobs in the area. He wanted to farm, so he purchased a small farm west of Underwood, just below the future Garrison Dam.
Clements became a commercial aerial sprayer, so the rest of the family carried out the farming duties until they were older and started to leave home. Elsie and Clem bought a house in Underwood as his health began to fail. They later became snowbirds and purchased a motorhome and traveled to Florida. Clem always said Elsie was a good traveler as long as she had some thread and a hook, she would stitch all the way. She loved to knit, crochet and embroider many beautiful pieces. Elsie never worked off the farm, but in her later years, she operated a small restaurant with her daughter in Underwood.
Elsie is survived by her daughter, Shirley Seher, Jamestown, ND; a son, Roger Clark, Enumclaw, WA; her grandchildren: Kevin and Brenda Seher, Baldwin, ND, David and Judy Seher, Jamestown, ND, Jeffrey Seher, Jamestown, ND, Patty and Randy Martin, Jamestown, ND, Sherri and Dean Melhoff, Wilton, ND, Todd and Marla Clark, Enumclaw, WA and Dawn and Doug Dingle, Auburn, WA; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews who will miss her.
