Obituary

Elmer C. Strobel, 92, Bismarck, ND formerly of Turtle Lake died April 15, 2019 at CHI St. Alexius Health, Bismarck.  Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Friday, April 26, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake with Pastor Sondra Krogstad officiating. Interment will be held in the Turtle Lake Cemetery with military rites provided by the Turtle Lake American Legion Post #133. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.

Elmer was born September 27, 1926 on the Strobel family farm south of Mercer, ND the son of Dan and Mary (Werre) Strobel. He attended Park District School. He was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church south of Mercer. Elmer was inducted into the U.S. Army on October 29, 1945. Following basic training at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland, Elmer spent some time at Camp Stoneman, California before shipping out to Hawaii. Elmer served as a cook in Scofield Barracks, Oahu and later served as acting Mess Sergeant. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in December of 1946. He returned to Mercer where he farmed with his father until 1950. Elmer then rented the Emil Fischer farm South of Mercer until 1957. He then purchased the Strobel family farm. He farmed and had dairy cattle until 1972 when some of his land, the farm site and buildings were purchased by the Bureau of Reclamation. The land was needed for the building of the McClusky Canal. The land is now part of West Park Lake. Elmer sold his cattle but continued to farm while living in Turtle Lake. In 1976 he built a new home in Turtle Lake and retired from farming in 1986.

Elmer married Irene (Anderson) Jones on November 3, 1988 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Turtle Lake. He has two stepsons, Daniel Haven (Denise) Jones of Fort Mojave, AZ and Donald Leroy (Melissa) Jones of Minot, ND and five step grandchildren, Dillon Daniel, Cole Dallas, Brock Dalton, Daniel Thomas and Madeline Marie. Elmer and Irene made their home in Turtle Lake until 2008 when they moved to Bismarck.

He enjoyed bowling for many years. He loved to garden, cook and to oil paint. Elmer was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Turtle Lake and was a believer in God. He truly loved his family and country. He was also a member of the Turtle Lake American Legion Post #133.

Elmer is survived by his wife, Irene Strobel of Bismarck; his stepsons and step grandchildren; his brothers, Milbert (Delma) Strobel of Des Moines, WA, Darvin (Janice) Strobel of Orangevale, CA and Jack (Gayle) Strobel of Rocklin, CA; his brothers-in-law, Ray Bird of Bismarck and Bill Wagner of Suisun City, CA and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters, Leona Ramsey, Frieda Hammock, Betty Roweeder, Marion Uhlich, Norma Bird and Mavis Wagner; two brothers, an infant brother Roy Strobel  and Melvin Strobel.
