Eleanor M. Sheldon, age 88 of West Fargo, formerly of Washburn, ND, died Friday, July 17, 2009 at a Fargo hospital surrounded by her family.
A private family service will be held on Tuesday, July 21 at Goetz Funeral Home in Washburn.
Interment will be held at Riverview Cemetery – Washburn.
Eleanor was born June 24, 1921 in Lodgepole, Nebraska to John William Hyde & Eleanore (McNeff) Hyde. She graduated from Lodgepole High School in 1938 and continued her education at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. She graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1942. Eleanor's experience at the University of Nebraska led her to become a life-long Cornhusker fan. Following her graduation, she was employed with the National Weather Service in Denver, CO for a short time. Eleanor married Harry A. Sheldon on April 15, 1943 in Denver. They moved to Hanford, WA in 1943 and both worked at the Hanford Site of the "Manhattan Project" where Eleanor worked as secretary to the Fire Chief. They moved to rural Washburn in 1946 and began their farming operation north of town. They moved into Washburn in 1951 where they raised their family. Eleanor remained in the home they built together 50 years ago until the fall of 2007 when she moved to a new apartment in West Fargo. In her earlier years, Eleanor was a busy homemaker. She was an excellent cook, maintained a large yard for many years, and cared for two dogs. She enjoyed playing bridge and looked forward to trips to the casino. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family.
She is survived by two daughters, Jean (Dennis) Martin of Fargo, & Kay (Ron) Hegvik of Cooperstown, ND; one son, James (Marlene) Sheldon of Solvang, CA; six grandchildren, Thomas (Anne) Martin, Brian (Michelle) Martin, & Linsey Hegvik, all of Fargo, Kimberlee Hegvik & Jim Hegvik of West Fargo, and Heather (Bernie) Taupin of Santa Ynez, CA; six great-grandchildren, Brianna Martin, Samantha Martin, John Dennis Martin, Taylor Martin, Charley Taupin, & Georgey Taupin; two brothers, Jerry Hyde of Fort Collins, CO, & Don Hyde of Lodgepole, NE; and several nieces & nephews.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband (Harry), her parents, one brother (Harold), and sister (Genevieve Epstein).
