Eileen V. Schell, 83, of Mercer, ND died May 15, 2015 in the Sanford Health Sunset Drive Continuing Care Center, Mandan, ND. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday May 23, 2015 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Mercer. Officiating will be Pastor Randy Emgarten. Interment will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery rural Mercer. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Friday and one hour prior to the service Saturday all at the church. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 PM Friday at the Church.
Eileen was born February 10, 1932 on a farm near Mercer, ND the daughter of Fred and Martha (Schlafman) Laib. She was raised and educated in Mercer. Eileen married Ervin H. Schell on September 24, 1952 at his parent's home in Bismarck. Following their marriage they lived in Bismarck until 1953 when they moved to a farm south of Mercer. They farmed for 17 years before moving into Mercer. Eileen owned and operated Schell's Coffee Shop from 1968 until 1975. She then worked at the Turtle Lake Hospital and the Turtle Lake Tastee Freeze. In 1979 they purchased Schell's Food Market and also added a hardware department in the adjacent post office. Eileen also worked for the City of Mercer until retiring in 2005.
Eileen enjoyed baking, gardening, Friday morning coffee with her friends and community activities. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Eileen was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, south of Mercer and later Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She was active in church and various community activities.
Eileen is survived by her daughter, Marlene (Robert) Young of Steele, ND; two grandchildren, Charlie (Jessica) Young and Matthew Young all of Bismarck; three great-grandchildren: Braeden, Dawson and Adalyn; a brother and sisters-in-law, Wilbert (Gertie) Laib of New Rockford, ND and Ellen Laib of Winona, MN; a sister, Marion (Lloyd) Heid of Mercer, ND; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Don (Linda) Schell of Detroit Lakes, MN, Doris Schell of Pelican Rapids, MN, Mavis Schell of Bismarck, Vangie Schell of Napoleon, ND, Anna (Rueben) Schoepp of Bismarck, Lenora Thompson of Mandan and many nieces and nephews.
Eileen was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 61 years Ervin, a son Gordon, infant sister Loretta and two brothers and sister-in-law: Meinhart (Doris) Laib and Leroy Laib.
